So, let me share with you a story from my childhood...which explains, in better detail, why I titled this blog like I did.
I was probably 7 or 8 years old and was shopping with my mom in a department store. Even that early on...I loved babies and couldn't wait to be a mommy someday. There was not a single child, I saw (through my child like eyes) that was less than beautiful. To me...they were all adorable! So anyway, we are walking through the store and we came upon a lady pushing her shopping cart with her baby in it. Of course, I look at my mom and say, "Mommy...isn't that baby adorable?" She looks over and me and flat out says, "NO!" in a pretty loud voice. I was completely speechless and embarrassed. I knew the mommy had heard my mom's comment and I was as offended and upset as the mom probably was. What the heck mom?
So, after the incident we decided to come up with a code word for babies that my mom didn't really think were as "cute" (OR EVEN CUTE AT ALL for that matter). I always told her...if I ever heard her use that CODE WORD, in referring to my children...someday...I would be seriously upset.
The code word was, "PRECIOUS". Now, typically, that's a common word for people to use when talking about kids really being adorable. But to my mom...it meant she thought the child was down right hideous, but at least the parent wouldn't know her underlying negative tone.
Thankfully, she has never called my kids precious (though I think they are...in the real sense of the word), but when I hear other's call my kids that...I often catch myself cringing. I know they are not insinuating what my mom did with that word...but it still has that effect on me when I hear the word. I truthfully have removed it from my vocabulary, as to not be offensive (though the parents would never know) towards a parent about their baby.
I still think that all babies...are ADORABLE!! Guess that's a stage I've never grown out of!
