Have you ever heard a child, when you're out shopping tell their parent that they "HATE" them?
Maybe you've over heard a child talking about someone and they refer to them as "DUMB" or "STUPID"?
Maybe you've even heard a child cuss or swear?
These types of things...out of the mouths of children...make the hair raise on my neck. Why? These are "NO NO" words in our house. Why? Because we are trying to raise four children to be good, moral, loving, kind, gentle understanding adults. With the tolerance of our children using the words above...how can our job be accomplished?
I mean, think about the word HATE? I've discussed with the kids the fact that I know (without a doubt) they will not like me (at all) from time to time (mostly when being punished or not given what they want)...but they are never allowed to tell me (or each other or anyone else for that matter) that they HATE! It's such a strong word! I think it's used way to lightly nowdays.
I also do not think it's okay for children to use the words "stupid" or "dumb", because those are adjectives that are not only put downs, but there is no way for them to be used in any way other than a negative statement. In a world where bullying is out of control, do you think that if we taught our kids to speak kinder to one another and not use these types of words in their everyday typical sentences...this world might become a much more positive place to live and raise a family in? Our kids might grow up feeling safer, better about themselves, more confident than ever?
Finally, hearing a child use a profane word makes me go insane! How can parents be okay hearing their children speak like that? I'm not talking about teenagers (cause we all go through a stage where slipping a couple of these words in our vocabulary, we think, sounds cool)...but little ones, grade schooler's, even toddlers saying these FOUR Letter Words. OH MY GOODNESS!
So, I am curious what words you have made an effort to have your kids avoid in their everyday vocabulary? Do you feel the way I do about this topic or think differently? I'd love to hear your thoughts...even if they don't match up with mine. Everyone is entitled to their own way of being...hearing other sides helps us form an even stronger foundation for our own opinions.
