Being a younger mommy, with kids who are starting to reach ages where I need to ask questions...I need your advice. At what age do you allow a child to ride through your neighborhood alone? Perhaps with friends? But considering that your child will be riding to your home by themselves when they return?
Does it depend on where you live?
Does it depend on how busy your neighborhood streets are?
Does it depend on who they are riding around with?
Here's why I ask...as a young person, my parents (from my recollection) allowed my sister and I to ride our bikes through our neighborhood (which was brand new and totally safe) starting around 6th grade (for me and 4th for my sister...because she was with me). Of course, we only rode on neighborhood streets and were not allowed to go onto main streets or out of the attached area...but we did have some scares even in our "safe neighborhood" and that was years and years ago. We were followed, chased by cars with single men (I am not making this up), etc. We had to, on a couple occasions, get off our bikes at someones house (that we didn't know) and act like we were home so the person following us would GO AWAY! Talk about having your heart pound out of your chest.
Therefore...I am a bit protective of my children and about them leaving my line of sight...with good reason. But I guess some would consider me "OVERLY" protective. However, my kids are all under 9 and in my opinion, have no business riding around the neighborhood on their own yet.
However, I want to know what you think...cause maybe I am over-reacting! Maybe my kids should be allowed to go. WHAT are your thoughts? If you have older kids...what age did you allow them to go on their own? PLEASE SHARE...learning from other parents helps me form my own opinion & decision as a mommy! I LOVE to hear what other's think about things!
