I love having a clean house! It's something I take pride in and work hard to keep up with. But one major area that I struggle with is keeping a cleanly mopped floor.
For instance...our landlord (bless his soul) came yesterday and re-tarred parts of our driveway (where cracks were formed from the snow damage this winter). This would have been no big deal, if he had done it on a day that was dry and warm. I'm really not sure what he was thinking? But instead, it rained almost all day yesterday and wasn't over 60 degrees. Keep in mind...we have four kids that play outside and a dog that is in and out all day long! Therefore...anywhere you walk, you get tar on your shoes and it's absolutely unavoidable, to prevent it from coming in on our hardwood floors. It is seriously everywhere! TALK ABOUT HORRIFYING!
This seriously disturbs me (to say the least)!
So, I get the mop out today and start scrubbing like a manic, trying to get the tar off the floor (almost impossible) and clean areas where the rain & mud have made it a mess. I always feel accomplished and good about my floor, as it's drying. About five to ten minutes...
It's the process after the floor has dried and the kids & dog are allowed on it again...that makes me feel that mopping the floor, at least while the kids are present is a COMPLETELY worthless chore (for right now) . Yes...initially the floor needs to be cleaned...but it's SUPER frustrating to have it ruined again the minute they are allowed back on it. Can't I just I rope off the entire house with "DO NOT ENTER" signs? Nope...so I just have to grin & bare it and remind myself, "you'll miss having a dirty floor someday!" Someday, when my kids are gone and our dog is to old and stoved up to be out romping in the mud...there will be no more little feet prints, no more spilled juice marks, no more muddy paws running across the floor.
Until then, if you visit my home and notice a bit of a dirty floor...please don't think it's cause I'm a horrible housekeeper or don't care to keep things clean...cause that's far from the truth. The truth of the matter is...I am going to just embrace the fact that my floor will not be spotless at this time of our lives and I will have to be okay with it. I'm not going to kill myself, or make life miserable for my children...just to keep my floor clean and shiny! Their enjoyment of their childhood and my enactment of my sanity are to valuable for me!
